Choosing the right caster

Casters come in three basic styles; standard, heavy-duty, and shock absorbing. Standard and heavy-duty casters come as rigid and swivel, and steel and aluminum variations.

Both aluminum and steel casters have advantages and disadvantages, depending on your needs.

Aluminum:

• Is lighter than steel
• Requires less maintenance because of its washability and natural resistance to corrosion
• Is spark resistant, which is important in environments where wet floors, fire, and explosions are common hazards
• Has a softer consistency, which results in quieter operation and reduced noise pollution

Steel:

• Is stronger than aluminum
• Can carry heavier loads than similar casters manufactured with aluminum
• Is less expensive than aluminum.

How much weight you need to move, as well as how far you need to move it will determine how heavy duty a caster you will need. Each caster has its own load capacity.
